The School of Early Childhood (SEC) provides high quality academic programs that combine intellectual rigour, a strong focus on investigation and an emphasis on practical application. Attention to comparative aspects of education in a global environment and to local and regional issues and contexts is a priority in all aspects of our programs.

The major approach adopted is one of guided learning which involves academic staff working alongside students to apply theoretical understandings to their work with children and those around them..

Students are encouraged to view education as a life-long process generated from the home and community and reaching beyond school contexts to career-long professional development.

Staff support learning of a high standard across a diverse student population. The actions of staff reflect two main priorities. The first is to foster relationships that illustrate sociability, tolerance and respect for diversity, to be responsive to and supporting students as they control and are responsible for their own learning. The second is to challenge student thinking and encourage critical minds capable of analysing issues and practices affecting young children and acting in ways that value children, childhood and a civil society.
